The Government has announced a proposal to extend redundancy protection for women and new parents. A consultation paper has been published following recommendations made by the Taylor Review of Modern Working Practices in 2017.
Currently, under regulation 10 of the Maternity and Parental Leave etc Regulations 1999, before making a woman on maternity leave redundant, she must be offered a suitable alternative vacancy, where one is available.
The new proposal is to extend the redundancy protection to a further six months after returning to work. This may also be extended to women who have told their employer that they are pregnant.
In addition to maternity leave, the Government is likely to extend the same rights to parents returning to work from adoption leave, shared parental leave and possibly longer periods of parental leave.
