At Backhouse Solicitors we have been giving great legal advice to individuals and businesses in Chelmsford and around Essex for many years. Celebrating our 20th birthday in January 2025, we take a look at how it all began.
A long, long time ago in a spare room not so far away, Minal Backhouse, an expert in employment law, started Backhouse Solicitors with the sole intention of offering clients the best possible expertise, a top-class service and value for money.
The business grew steadily with a handful of clients, but as word spread and with the support and encouragement of her husband Ben Backhouse, it soon become apparent this wasn’t going to be a ‘one man (or woman!) band’ operation, but a successful law firm.
After the first year, and birth of her son, it soon become necessary to move to business premises and take on some staff, so Minal and Ben set up shop at The Waterhouse Business Centre and soon established a reputation as one of the most successful employment law teams in Essex.
As we grew, we encountered more and more enquiries relating to other areas of law outside of Employment Law. With that, in 2009 we opened our debt recovery department and worked with clients from small businesses up to large multinationals helping them improve their cashflow.
In 2015 an opportunity arose to move into 71 Duke Street and merge with Duffield Stunt Solicitors, a law firm created from the merger of Duffields (formed in 1799) and Stunt & Son (formed in 1825). That means we can now trace our origins back more than two centuries of service to the people and businesses of Essex.
The merger doubled our size and enabled us to help clients with a much wider range of legal problems. Before we knew it, we had employed a Family law team, Wills and Probate specialists and Property law experts to manage all the conveyancing work that was coming through the door.
By 2020 we had outgrown the offices at 71 Duke Street and decided to take the leap to larger premises and relocated all the way across the street to No. 17! With a team of 26 people, it was hard to imagine ever filling the larger new offices, but we were growing fast and wanted to continue expanding and by the time we reached 2022, we had doubled in size again with over 45 people on the team!
Just a few months ago, the decision was made to make another ambitious leap, and we opened a second office in Leigh-on-Sea. We hope that this will open doors for a wide range of expert professionals to join our team, but also enable us to work with many more clients from down by the seaside!
